The Territory - it's not what you'd expect

Wave Pool

You’ve heard us talk about the surprising qualities the Territory has to offer, but don’t just take our word for it. We recently asked Territorians what they think would surprise people most about this amazing place.

While developing our Boundless Possible story, we discovered that the Territory had a bit of an image problem. People outside the Territory thought it as nothing more than dirt, rocks and crocs, but Territorians told a completely different story. They described a place with boundless potential and opportunities, connected communities and a ‘give it a go’ attitude that sees innovative thinking simply referred to as ‘getting things done’.

Here, you feel what it’s like to be part of a collective of doers and creators. So when we were invited to the recent Darwin CBD Expo, we saw it as a great opportunity to speak with Territorians and have them tell us what people outside the Territory would find the most surprising.

There’s more than just dirt, rocks and crocs

Often families and friends just assumed that the Territory is just ‘outback’ and ‘Crocodile Dundee’ but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There’s bars, cafes and market places and when Territorians send photos to friends and family, they’re surprised to see that there are actually cool cities here.

A place where you can change your lifestyle

The one thing everybody talked about was our unique lifestyle. People described a place that was relaxed with no traffic and no stress. A place where you still have time for activities and you’re not wasting hours commuting to and from work.

The weather is pretty amazing

We heard that people outside the Territory have this idea that it’s hot and dry but the weather is actually an incredible part of living here. They told us of this unique outdoor lifestyle which you can enjoy all year round and not be restricted by those cold winter months.

“The fact that you can walk outside your door 12 months of the year, you can’t do in most southern capitals when it’s five degrees in winter” - Adam
